As originally broadcast on Japanese TV.

Description of what effects the edits/changes had on the original story/plot (opinion)

It's too early to tell the extent of the changes and their effects, but by attempting to highlight Li as a main character and to lessen Sakura's role Nelvana changed the very nature of the show and at the very least lost the character building that Sakura goes through during the first 7 episodes.

 Detailed description of video edits
Video was altered to remove Japanese writing (the chalkboard in the classroom, for instance).

Episodes were skipped and the order was rearranged. It is unknown if these skipped episodes will ever be broadcast or if Kids WB will air them in the proper order when Cardcaptors is shown in it's weekday slot.

Various edits to episodes to make them shorter and to feature Li more.

Detailed description of opening and ending changes
Completely new OPs and EDs were created for the English TV release, including the use of computer graphics.
Detailed description of English subtitle changes
Pioneer will be releasing uncut sub-only VHS/DVDs starting in October 2000.
Detailed description of English dub changes
The pronunciation of Sakura was changed from the correct SAH-koo-RAH. Japanese references were changed/removed. Background music was replaced with music that conveyed a darker/more foreboding atmosphere.
Detailed description of name and title changes

In addition to change the name of the show from Card Captor Sakura to Cardcaptors (which in our opinion was to disguise the fact that Sakura is the star of the show), most of the characters names were changed:

English Name Japanese Name
Sakura Avalon Sakura Kinomoto
Li Showron Li Shaolan
Madison Taylor Tomoyo Daidoji
Tori Avalon Toya Kinomoto
Julian Star Yukito Tsukishiro
Meilin Rae Meilin Li
Aiden Avalon Fujitaka Kinomoto
Natasha Avalon Nadeshiko Kinomoto
Layla Mackenzie Kaho Mizuki
Rita Rika
Nikki Naoko
Chelsea Chiharu
Zachary Takashi
