Uncut version: Kitty Media

Japanese version that North American version is based on:
Original OVA release containing two complete and uncut OVA episodes with mosaic censor

Due to the various versions of this title released in their North American market, I have divided this report up to cover each release in several ways. Since Kite is an adult title, some language used in these reports may not be suitable for all readers.

General release (heavily edited) of Kite from Media Blasters under their AnimeWorks label (non-spoiling)

This editing report covers the original AnimeWorks release of Kite on sub VHS, dub VHS, and bilingual DVD. All AnimeWorks versions were heavily edited from the original version released in Japan.

This editing report covers the original AnimeWorks release of Kite on sub VHS, dub VHS, and bilingual DVD. All AnimeWorks versions were heavily edited from the original version released in Japan.

Adult release (less-cut) of Kite from Kitty Media (without screen shots)

This editing report covers the adult release of Kite on sub VHS and dub VHS. While this Kitty Media release is mostly uncut, there are still several cuts concerning the younger Sawa.

Adult release (fully uncut) of Kite from Kitty Media

The "Kite: Special Edition (UNCUT)" is completely uncut as far as we can determine. The openings, ending credits, and previously edited video have been restored.

While it appears some of the dialog has been changed to make it seem like the older Sawa is going to college (other versions of Kite from Mida Blasters had various mentions, including one where she was studying to get into college), the disk is uncut otherwise.

Here is the cover of the uncut version:

Description of what effects the edits/changes had on the original story/plot (opinion)

Major impact on Sawa's (the main character) motivations throughout the story, especially the very end. Various instances of character development were also lost because of the removed scenes.

Please see the video edit descriptions (both non-spoiling and spoiling) for more information on the impact of the edits.

 Detailed description of VIDEO EDITS

There were 6 scenes edited/removed in the Anime Works version of Kite. The following is a description of those scenes and their impact on the story. This section was written to avoid spoilers for people who have not seen any version of Kite.

About 30 seconds out of the 7 minutes that was cut from the original story would probably be regarded as child pornography in the United States (although even that is debatable as the current laws are very vague about animated works). I have no problems with those cuts, although I'd rather they had found a way to save the young Sawa's expressions which,in my opinion, help tell the story.

If it was only the young Sawa scenes where she is clearly underage that were cut, I could accept the cuts as being an unfortunate necessity. But the cuts of the adult sex scenes were apparently made for the sole purpose of selling Kite to an audience that it was never intended to be sold to (the general market). If Media Blasters would just put out a uncut version as well as the hacked version, everyone could have their anime their way. Unedited or edited. Choice is good.

Edited scene 1:
The first cut scene is of the older Sawa and Akai having sex. In the Anime Works version she turns him down for sex and the scene changes to a bench with Kanie and Ouburi. In the edited version the sex takes place. So the edited version give the viewer the impression that Sawa has the ability to turn Akai down for sex without fear of reprisal, which is not the case in the original.

Edited scene 2:
The second cut scene was of Akai raping young Sawa (not violently). It was more a rape of her fragile mind to bend her to his will. It was graphic and I understand it having to be cut even for a Kitty adult release since young Sawa is clearly underage. Although the US laws are fairly vague on animated depiction of child pornography, I'm sure this scene might get Media Blasters hauled into court. The preferred method of dealing with this scene would be to mask the genitals. Either by zooming in on her face, or putting a mask around her lower body. A mosaic censor probably wouldn't be enough to avoid legal problems in the US.

Edited scene 3
The third cut was a gratuitous sex scene of a adult couple (probably boss/secretary). Didn't need to be there, but there was no reason to cut it other than not wanting to release the story as originally intended.

Edited scene 4
The fourth cut was of Kanie (the fat guy) raping a young woman in his place. She appears to be over 18. This scene does help show what kind of man Kanie is in my opinion. In the edited version, he's just a big thug with no personality. In the original, this scene helps show how similar to Akai he really is.

Edited scene 5
The fifth cut scene was a brief (2 seconds) shot of Akai and Kanie on a couch and the girl is 'servicing' Akai while Kanie talks on the phone.

Edited scene 6
The sixth scene is the buildup to the climax (not THAT kind of climax) to the story. Basically, it's Sawa being forced to have sex with Akai because Kanie is threatening to kill Oburi (this is not a spoiler, since there was no HINT that this is why Sawa ended up in bed with Akai at this point in the edited version).

This last scene that was removed also had flashbacks of Sawa being raped as a kid as we see the difference in her state of mind then and now. The flashback scenes would likely have to be removed or masked due to child pornography concerns, but the main scene is perfectly acceptable for an video sold to adults, as this title was always intended to be sold to.

The end of this scene had Sawa casually getting out of bed and getting dressed. That last bit was the only part left in the edited version, leaving the viewer with no idea of what led them to have sex at that point (there was no indication that it was forced on Sawa in the edited version and it appeared consensual).

Detailed description of opening and ending changes
The ending from the end of OVA 1 was removed along with the opening from OVA episode 2, thus producing a seamless viewing experience/movie.
