Description of what effects the edits/changes had on the original story/plot (opinion)

The dialog changes are unneeded and alter the whole series of jokes surrounding Rei and Sana's relationship (which any open minded individual can tell is platonic and innocent).

The music change is also unfortunate, since it's generally one of the most recognizable pieces of music for Child's Toy. Not using the orignal animation for the first opening is aslo a very bad mistake.

 Detailed description of Audio changes

Due to licensing issues, the song "19 o'clock News" has been removed from the opening and from within the Japanese and English audio of episode 1. Te second opening song ("Ultra Relax") is used instead with the second opening animation.

A mention of the group that sang the song (Tokio) has also been removed from the subtitles and English dub script.

Detailed description of English dub changes

The English dub dialogue in volume #1 of FUNimation's release of Kodocha (aka Kodomo no Omocha) has been toned down from the original Japanese dialogue. However the subtitles accurately reflect the Japanese dialogue with problematic references intact. There are no changes to the visual artwork that I am aware of. These are the changes on the first disc:

English dub title of episode #1 is "I'm an Elementary School Student with an Agent" while the sub gives the title as "I'm an Elementary School Student with a Pimp."

In the English dub the exchange between Sana and her hairdresser removes references to the hairdresser being gay and having the hots for Rei-kun. It also removes Sana telling him that Rei-kun is off limits because he is already Sana's boyfriend and pimp. This dialogue is intact in the subtitles.

In the English dub when Sana goes off to bed Sana's invitation to Rei-kun to sleep with her is removed as well as Mama's ominous warning to Rei-kun that he is not permitted anything beyond a kiss on the cheek regarding Sana. Again this dialogue is intact in the subtitles.

Oddly enough in episode #4 Sana calls Rei-kun her pimp in the English dub.

Likely as not the English dub was recorded with a possible TV broadcast in mind so material that might be problematic was toned down or removed. Overall FUNimation has done a stellar job with Kodocha however it should be noted that the English dub dialogue appears to have been rewritten from the original Japanese.

What you can do
Write/contact:
  • Please write or otherwise contact Funimation and voice your opinion about the changes they made to the dub script in Kodocha. Remember to be polite as possible and ask for them to not make similar changes in future English dubs. Threatening or sending them flames will only get your message discarded.

 Anime´ Notes

We do not support the changing of dialog in order to make a title appeal to people who might otherwise not find the original story not to their liking or object to the original story/dialog, especially where it alters the plot/story (which we believe it does in this instance, even in a small way).
