Description of what effects the edits/changes had on the original story/plot (opinion)

The changing of 'BITCH' to 'LOSER' changes the intensity of the attack on the student (ask any woman which they would find more offensive). 'LOSER' makes the attack seem silly, while 'BITCH' seems more serious and threatening. The change at the beginning of the episode makes the attacker seem less threatening and changes the mood of the episode that follows. This kind of change is not acceptable to me.

 Detailed description of video edits

In episode 6 (2nd episode on tape/disc 2) of ADV's version, there is a still image at 25 minutes and 18 seconds into the tape/disc (not counting previews/trailers) that has 'LOSER' digitally overlaid on the girl's forehead. In the original (at least the Japanese LD release), this 3 second shot is not a still frame (the girl is shaking with fear) and the writing on her forehead reads 'BITCH' (in English).

The still frame with 'LOSER' looks like it was drawn over a still frame of the original 'BITCH' version. Apparently, it was a change made by ADV to remove the offensive language the producer didn't feel fit in with the rest of the series and also to avoid raising the 12+ rating..

ADV's dub VHS and DVD

All versions just before cutting to the close-up of the girl's face (not that you can just make out the start of 'Bitch' on her forehead.

Note: This video change is only present on ADV's VHS dub and DVD version of Lost Universe, the sub VHS was not censored.

Detailed description of opening and ending changes

The opening used on ADV's version of Lost Universe was different that the one used for the Japanese release. The song is the same and some of the visuals identical, but there are many shots of old fashioned items (a locket/broach of some sort and a spinning wheel, for instance). This may be due to different openings being used for the original Japanese television broadcast and the Japanese LD release, but it would be nice to have the alternate opening included as an extra at some point.

Also, ADV replaced the original Japanese logo (which contained the English title as well as the Kanji characters). Although it blends well with the rest of the opening (it is over a moving starfield, just like the original), there is really no need to replace a logo that already has English in it.
