Since most of the changes only affected the openings and endings of the episodes/movies and the rearranged TV episodes are episodic, there really was no effect on the story or plot due to the changes. It is unknown if the 'Present' TV ending will ever be used, so it might go unseen by North American fans (unless they have the Music Video tape from the season 1 boxset).

The changes are minor, but at the same time undesirable and unnecessary.

TV Series:

The first 12 episodes in TV season 2 (called Anything Goes Martial Arts by Viz) were rearranged by Viz from the order they were originally aired on Japanese television. The following list shows the original order they were release in Japan and the order that Viz released them in (the episodes that Viz released out of order are highlighted in red):

For seasons 3-5, Viz also took episodes from the next season to fill the last tape of the prior season. So far, they have done this for the last Hard Battle tape (Ukyo's Skirt! The Great Girly-Girl Gambit! was originally in season 4) and for the last Outta Control tape (The Revenge of Ling-Ling, Lung-Lung! was originally a season 5 episode). Not only did they move these episodes from their original order, they changed the original openings and endings used (see below).

Viz has also rearranged season 6 (which they are calling Random Rhapsody) quite substantially. While they have stated that it was done to prevent breaking multi-part stories between volumes, a close look at what they rearranged makes it more likely that they wanted to avoid putting too many discs out with episodes that people would concider 'skippable'.

As of the first 4 volumes, season 7 (Ranma Forever)appears to be following the original broadcast order. Hopefully the last 5 discs will also be left in their original order.

TV Series:

Viz replaced the original opening and endings on the two episodes they moved to fill the last tapes of Hard Battle and Outta Control (UkyoÕs Skirt! The Great Girly-Girl Gambit! and The Revenge of Ling-Ling, Lung-Lung!) with the OPs and EDs from those two seasons. They also did not use the ending with the song Presence, which should have been on the later Hard Battle episodes and the early Outta Control episodes. They released all the OPs and EDs for the TV series on a bonus 'Ranma 1/2 Music Videos' tape that was included in the boxset of season 1, so they do apparently have the rights to the song and ending animation.

Movies:

In movie 1 (Big Trouble in Nekonron, China) Viz squeezed the end credits vertically to make them appear in a letterbox format. This distorted the animation and made the characters appear 'squished'. Since the rest of the movie was shown in 4:3 full frame, I have no idea why Viz decided to do this to the end credits. The DVD of movie 1 contained the unsqueezed credits as an extra, but the squeezed version was shown immediately after the movie.

OVAs:

The first six OVAs all used the same opening and ending. Viz left these intact, except for dubbing the opening song in English (OVAs 3-6 only). But for what they called OVAs 7 through 12 (they were actually a collection of OVAs, Super OVAs, and a Movie) each OVA had a different opening and ending.

Viz only dubbed two songs ("Where Do We Go From Here? (You and Me)" and "Red Shoe Sunday") out of the original OP/EDs for OVAs 7-12. For the dub VHS and DVD (I don't know for sure on the sub VHS) they replaced the OP/EDs on OVAs 7-12 with those two OP/EDs instead of the original OP/Eds. They did include all of the creditless OP/EDs as bonus 'Music Videos' on both the tapes and DVDs.
