Description of what effects the edits/changes had on the original story/plot (opinion)

Although the overlays and hard subs didn't change the story (that I know of, since some of the computer screens had Western quotes that may or may not have been in the original for all we know), they certainly are unwelcome and unneeded. Since they already had two subtitles tracks (one for the sub dialog and one for the dub watchers), they could have just put the sign translations in the subtitle tracks. Even the computer screens could be reproduced with DVD soft subtitles with a little effort. Unfortunately, Viz doesn't always put that much effort into their releases.

 Detailed description of video edits

During the episodes, computer screens show up with a display showing parts of a diary or a famous quote. Viz replaced the original screen content (presumably kanji text) with a blank gray screen with English text appearing a word at a time.

Throughout the episodes, they use hard subs to translate signs and other onscreen text (this when they already have two subtitle tracks on the DVD, one for the subbed dialog and one for the dub watchers, the later of which only seems to be used for the song lyrics in the extras).
